LG G3 – Root & Stock Android (Lollipop) 5.0

I recently received my LG G3 (855) and moving from Nexus 5 running Android 5.0 (I just had to have it upgraded to 5.0 from 4.4.2) and couldn’t wait until released in my country via over-the-air (OTA) by LG. So what does one do, installs it! πŸ˜€

Requirements:

Note: You cannot perform a restore to KitKat (4.4.x) via LG PC Suite if you upgrade to Lollipop (5.0)

Step 1 – Root

  • After you have installed the Windows USB drivers above, download the latest version of PurpleDrake Lite and extract to C:\PurpleDrake

  • Connect the phone via USB and go to where you extracted the PurpleDrake zip archive and execute purpledrake_windows.bat and follow the screen instructions

Step 2 – Preparation

  • Create a folder on the phone and put on there the following files (for later use):

Step 3 – Install TWRP

  • Install SuperSu and execute it, you should have root now
  • Restart the phone
  • Download TWRP-D855_bumped.img to your phone
  • Download and install Flashify
  • OpenΒ Flashify and make sure you hit β€œGrant” when Superuser request window pops up then choose β€œRecovery image”.
  • Choose β€œChoose a file” and locate TWRP-D855_bumped.img and flash the recovery image
  • Finally choose β€œReboot now” and you should be in TWRP recovery

Perform a full nandroid backup by selecting : Boot; System; Data; Modem; EFS

Step 4 – Install Rooted Android (Lollipop) 5.0

  • While still in TWRP and after you have performed a nandroid backup perform a full clean wipe – System, Data, Dalvik, Cache
  • Install the uploaded D85520D.zip archive
  • Once installation has finished of the rom perform a wipe of Davlik and Cache
  • Then install SuperSU and wipe Davlik and Cache once more
  • Restart – it will take a little longer than usual to start but once done you should be on Android 5.0 Lollipop!

Bonus – Tweaks

  • Nova Launcher – Hide stock apps & other customisations (I chose not to uninstall the stock apps but instead hide them)
  • AdAway – Block advertisement
  • Texdroider_dpi – increase DPI from 640 (default) to 530 to make use of the screen real estate
